Large Deep Plate with Cat

This large plate is inscribed with the words, “All intellectual improvement arises from leisure”. Here’s hoping that the enforced ‘leisure’ of Covid will lead to our ‘intellectual improvement’! My cat is certainly a helpful role model in taking leisure seriously. The plate is hand thrown in red earthenware clay and decorated with white slip and coloured glazes. The beautiful calligraphy is by Michael Edwards, using a sgraffito technique, etching through the layers of slip to the clay colour underneath.
